Cover these first

Start with the front gate and car porch, where people and vehicles pause; then the main door, side lane where present, kitchen or rear door, and any accessible store or meter area. Each view needs a defined evidence target and a reason for retaining the footage.

What we usually skip

A gun camera high on the front wall with no porch coverage. A dome in the living room that only records the TV. Four identical cheap cameras when two good ones would see the gate and the back.

Night

If the porch lighting already provides usable colour and the target is close enough, conventional equipment may be sufficient. A dark lane that needs colour evidence may justify ColorVu-class or controlled supplemental lighting. Plate capture is a separate design task and should not be promised from a general overview camera. See the ColorVu / LPR note.

Recording

Choose retention from the time it normally takes to discover an incident, then calculate storage from camera count, resolution, frame rate, codec, recording schedule and event load. A fixed number of days is not a universal default. Higher resolution without matching storage, network capacity and playback needs can waste budget.

Privacy, access and deletion belong in the design

Avoid neighbouring interiors and places where people reasonably expect privacy. For organisations, Malaysian personal-data guidance treats CCTV imagery as personal data and emphasises a defined purpose, suitable notices, controlled access and regular deletion or overwrite when footage is no longer required. Audio should be enabled only for a justified need. Homeowners should apply the same restraint even where a specific organisational rule may not apply.

Wiring

Concealed runs where the renovation allows it. Label both ends. Photo the ceiling void before it closes. That photo is what after-sales actually uses.
